Richard Roy Varner
Varner, Richard Roy age 81 of Dartmouth passed away peacefully at his home on August 14, 2023. He leaves to mourn his sisters, Faye (Ken Hartlen), sister, Hazel Cooke; brother, Clinton, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Leah Varner; brothers, Loran, Earle, Raymond, Russell, Carl, as well as sisters, Shirley (Cameron) and Ruth (Russell). Richard was employed with Nova Scotia Power from 1965 to 1990. He started his career there as a mechanics helper and went on to apprentice as an Instrument Mechanic at Tuffs Cove. After completing his apprenticeship, he moved into the position of Instrument Technician, a challenging job that required time and study for the change from pneumatic to electronic control. Richard was a very busy person outside of his work life. He was a very talented singer and was the lead tenor for many years in the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He was also the principal tenor in Variety Fare for many years. Richard sang with the Bethany Chorale in churches across the Province and in special performances in support of the Grace Maternity Hospital. He was very active in his church and was very involved in the church Choir. He participated in the Edgewood Plays and loved every moment. He spent nine years working with “Uncle Mel and Uncle Cy” at CHNS Radio. In his spare time, Richard enjoyed playing bridge with some of his favourite people, Marilyn, Marion, George and Beryl. He was a talented photographer, and many of us enjoyed his “candid shots”. He loved to swim and was a long-time jogger. After retirement, Richard spent many days driving with his special friend, Helen Craig, sharing laughter and stories. He will be sorely missed by his choir family and special friend Eleanor Plowman. Special thanks to his care worker, Ingrid and his “personal organizer,” Joan MacNaughton. Cremation has taken place under the care of Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. A memorial service will be held 10:30 am Saturday, August 26, at Hope United Church, 3055 Connaught Ave., Halifax, NS, where a reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
